Go to download The 'Stacked Houses' project by Pedro Romera, from the Romera y Ruiz Arquitectos studio, has been one of the winners of the II Miguel Martín-Fernández de la Torre Architecture Prize for its innovative low-cost housing solution. The project, materialized in the Lola Massieu residential building in the Gran Canaria municipality of Telde, was commissioned by the company Edificios Singulares which, as Romera points out, sought “superior architectural quality.

For this purpose, a restricted competition was carried out in which the Romera y Ruiz Arquitectos studio was the winner. High energy efficiency standard It is an architectural complex of sustainable bioclimatic homes, with a high standard of energy efficiency through the use of nature and vegetation, as well as a wide range of resources, many of which already existed in traditional Canarian housing: “We have tried to reinvent concepts of traditional architecture.” It ensures that the energy efficiency elements of the homes almost double the current regulations, by using a minimum of artificial light and “optimizing each gap.” Thus, the name 'Stacked Houses' comes from the presence of high patios and terraces, which allow them to be lived in “with great quality and comfort.” So much so that, although designed long before the pandemic, its users have conveyed to the architects how beneficial these high-rise patios have been as a space for relief during confinement. Pedro Romera is sure that, in the future, rooftops, balconies and patios will be promoted as an essential space for habitability.
